The A.E. Backus Museum Announces an Exciting Season of Exhibitions and Events for 2024-25

Fort Pierce, FL – August 26, 2024

SEASON 64: 2024-25

The A.E. Backus Museum is pleased to announce the scheduled exhibitions and events for 2024-25, our upcoming 64th Season which opens in October. Now in its seventh decade, The Backus Museum continues its mission of promoting the arts in the community and perpetuating the artistic and humanitarian legacy of our namesake artist, A.E. “Bean” Backus (1906-1990). An exciting variety of exhibitions and events this year continue to illuminate this important purpose.

This season the Museum renews its long history of annual juried exhibitions to celebrate and refine the caliber of the arts in our community, enhancing the quality of life for all. The Best of the Best welcomes amateur and professional fine artists to enter their finest at the beginning of the season in October for awards and cash prizes. At the close of the season in May, Through the Eye of the Camera opens with the best examples of the art of photography also for awards and cash prizes.

The Museum will additionally present three special exhibitions that expand our offerings beyond the juried competitions. They include an internationally touring exhibition of studio art quilters called StitchPunk, featuring twenty-seven artists who interpret creativity into far-out fusions to tell their own distinctive stories; Florida Highwaymen at the Crossroadsthe latest in our annual exhibition series that highlights how the Highwaymen art and artists endure and flourish today; and Daydreaming – Niki Butcher’s Hand-Painted Photography, which focuses on the fading facades of old Florida.

Also new this year are several signature events: Beanie’s Old Florida Ball, a spirited celebration of the art and times of A.E. “Bean” Backus; The Floridiana Luncheon & Auction expands the theme of Sunday in Key West to include “All Things Florida;” and Jazz Brunch @ The Backus, where we will welcome friends old and new for a morning musical brunch al fresco in the spirit of Backus.

And if you like to show your support while getting something special at the same time, you’re in luck! The return of our Backus Benefit at Manor Auctions offers the public an opportunity to bid and own enticing works of art with all proceeds benefiting the Backus Museum; while the return of the annual Win a Masterpiece of Florida Art raffle furnishes your chance (or many) to win an original oil painting by master Florida artist James F. Hutchinson (1932-2023).

StitchPunk

November 22, 2024 – January 5, 2025

Imagine an existence where you pull one string and reality unravels. Twenty-seven artists from the U.S. (including three from Florida), United Kingdom, France, and Canada have interpreted the riotous creativity and far-out fusions of punk (Steampunk, Biopunk, Atompunk and more) to tell their own distinctive stories using fabric as their medium. In their hands, texture, stitching, stuffing, and more add a depth that cannot be conveyed through two-dimensional paintings or photographs. The dedication, skill, and unique perspectives of these creators form a rich tapestry of human expression. StitchPunk stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of sewing and the boundless possibilities it holds for artistic expression and social commentary.

Opening Reception – Friday, December 6, 6:00-8:00 pm | Remarks: 6:30 pm

Florida Highwaymen at the Crossroads

January 11 – March 2, 2025

Manifesting their dream with oil paint and gasoline, the artists known today as the Highwaymen drove themselves with talent and ingenuity – even though the challenging route to artistic prosperity was never guaranteed. Yet at each intersection of doubt, fortune, and consequence, their art continued and flourished. In this new exhibition featuring more than 50 paintings drawn together from around the state, Florida Highwaymen at the Crossroads reveals key moments, decisions, and twists of fate that helped put the Highwaymen on the map.

Opening Reception – Friday, January 17, 6:00-8:00 pm | Remarks: 6:30 pm

Daydreaming – Niki Butcher’s Hand-Painted Photography

March 7 – April 27, 2025

Daydreaming invites you to see the historical, beautiful, and sometimes quirky aspects of our world through the eyes of a thoughtful optimist. Niki Butcher has focused her camera on the fading facades of old Florida, capturing funky “mom & pop” wayside businesses, lonesome sandy beaches, and the beauty of the Everglades. Remembering the gentle feeling of old Florida postcards, she hand paints her black and white photographs in vibrant tones and pastel hues that breathe life and imagination into these scenes, creating a picture of life far beyond what a camera could capture. Through her photography, Butcher captures places and people that stand out as beautiful, unique, endangered, and authentic, with a view that adds a bit more color, a good dose of humor, and an infusion of positivity.

Opening Reception – Friday, March 14, 6:00-8:00 pm | Remarks: 6:30 pm
