This weekend will be full of music. It begins Saturday afternoon with “Evolutionary Art of the Music Video: Rock and Roll and Beyond” at the Vero Beach Museum of Art. The event will showcase the cinematography and storytelling of groundbreaking artistic music videos by pop icons. The event is curated by filmmaker, journalist, writer and artist Xaque (“Zack”) Gruber and is described as “a captivating journey through the evolution of music video from the swinging sixties to the digital era.” The 20 music videos include those by Dylan, Bowie, the Beatles, Eurythmics, Bjork, Beyonce, and more. The event is designed to explore the innovation in cinematography, editing and storytelling in artistic music videos. “Music videos are too often seen as kitsch,” Gruber said in a museum interview. “They are so much more. They are stunning pieces of filmmaking and art …These music videos raised the bar by bringing it to the level of ‘art’ so it’s only appropriate to showcase these in an art museum.” The “Evolutionary Art of the Music Video” presentation begins at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Vero Beach Museum of Art, 3001 Riverside Park Dr. Admission is $12 to $15. Enjoy a fully staged production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s iconic 1879 comic operetta “The Pirates of Penzance” this Sunday afternoon at the Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center. Presented by the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra, the production also stars the Central Florida Vocal Arts. Set against digital sets, the full orchestra and vocalists will perform the comic opera story of Frederic, an orphan mistakenly apprenticed to a band of jolly pirates. He disavows the pirate life and falls in love with Mabel, the daughter of a Major General. Intent on protecting his daughters, the Major General laments about being an orphan, thereby catching the heart of the pirates. Of course, raucous madness ensues. The show begins 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, at the Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center, 1707 16th St. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door. Although not musical per-se, there is a tie in when the Gifford Youth Orchestra holds its Back to School BBQ. There will be ribs, chicken, baked beans, coleslaw and garlic toast served up by 14 Bones. The Sangarita Challenge will be held next Thursday evening at United Against Poverty. The event, sponsored by the Exchange Club of Vero Beach, invites you to taste some sangrias, margaritas and small plates and then vote on your favorites. There will also be music, dancing and a silent auction. The event raises money for child abuse prevention programs, scholarships and local service projects. The competing restaurants include the American Icon Brewery, Armani’s Cucina, Carrabba’s, Cobalt, 21st Amendment Distillery and Twisted Lime. The cost to attend is $50.
