Joseph K. Virant, Sr., 79, Sebastian

Joseph K. Virant, Sr., 79, of Sebastian, Florida, passed away on July 24, 2024 in Sebastian.

Joseph was born in Cleveland, Ohio on August 20, 1944 to Joseph L. and Angela Virant. He married Mildred Sordelet on September 21, 1963. He served in the United States Army. Joseph worked as a railroad conductor for Metro North Railroad in New York for more than 20 years before
retiring.

Joe and Millie raised their family in Brewster, New York before retiring and moving to Boca Raton, Florida in 1992, where they spent 13 years  prior to moving to Sebastian in 2005.

While in Florida, Joseph was a member of SNPJ (Slovene National Benefit Society) as he was very proud of his Slovenian heritage. He loved playing his button box and listening to polka music, as well as making homemade Slovenian sausage. More recently, Joseph has been a member of Elks Lodge 1774 in Vero Beach, Florida. He enjoyed his weekly poker games with his buddies.

Joseph is preceded in death by Mildred, his loving wife of 55 years, and his grandson, Joseph Thomas Virant.

Joseph is survived by his daughters, Joanne Virant Torres of Port Saint Lucie, Florida and Amy L. Haines (Ryan) of Bluffton, South Carolina; his son, Joseph K. Virant, Jr. (Adelaida) of Boca Raton, Florida; his grandchildren – Matthew Torres, Samantha Torres, Sydney Battersby, Madison Battersby, Patrick Virant, and Isabella Virant; as well as his sister, Patricia Jones, of Eastlake, Ohio.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Any donations in his memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Michael E. Rockwell Sr., 66, Sebastian

October 12, 1957 – July 27, 2024

Michael E. Rockwell Sr., 66, of Sebastian, Florida, passed away July 27, 2024 at VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach, Florida.

He was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania on October 12, 1957, son of Thomas and Wanda (Lint) Rockwell.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister; Margaret, and brother; Thomas Rockwell of Uniontown, PA.

He is survived by his 2 children; Michael E. Rockwell Jr and Roma Rockwell, 2 grandchildren, siblings; Dorothy McFadden, Eva Rankin, Paula Brozik, Charles Rockwell as well as other family members all of Uniontown, PA.

Mike was always a hard worker and funny. He loved his Budweiser and hanging out with dogs and friends.

Cremation Service will be provided by Seawinds Funeral Home of Sebastian and there is no service/visitation service requested by the family.

Norma J. (Childers) Owens, 86, Vero Beach

June 29, 1938 – July 31, 2024

Norma J. (Childers) Owens, 86, passed away July 31, 2024, at Vero Beach Care Center. She was the widow of George C. Owens. They shared 51 years together.

Born in Lucasville, Ohio, she was the daughter of Jesse H. and Ora E. (Howard) Childers. Norma graduated from Lucasville Highschool and had several jobs throughout her life, most notably, an LPN at a nursing care center in LA, California, and a daycare teacher in Columbus, Ohio.  Norma had been a member of The Doctor’s Hospital Guild in Columbus, Ohio.

She will be remembered as an honest, kind, caring, loving, and strong woman. Norma enjoyed reading, sewing, crocheting, gardening, painting, baking, and cake decorating. She loved her family and was a caregiver her whole life to anyone that needed help or just needed someone to care.

She will be greatly missed by all whose lives she has touched.

Norma is survived by her daughter; Stephene (Alan) Hohman, her grandchildren; Roger (Kerry) Hohman and Lily (Steven) Tatz, her great-granddaughters; Reagan Hohman, Riley Hohman, Lucy Tatz, Reese Hohman, and Norma’s sweet beloved little dog, Cookie.

Norma was preceded in death by her husband; George Owens, her parents; Jesse and Ora Childers, and her siblings; Arthur, Harold, Ralph, and Howard Childers.

At her request, there will be no funeral services.

Joseph John Montagnino, Jr., 75, Sebastian

October 31, 1948 – July 31, 2024

Joseph John Montagnino, Jr. of Sebastian, Florida passed away on July 31, 2024. He was survived by his children, Jennifer Montagnino and Joseph Montagnino, his wife Deidre Owens and step daughter Chelsea Pettingill along with his five grandchildren. Joseph served in US Navy and retired with the US Postal Service. He was an avid fisherman, a member of the Wood Turners Association and the Vero Beach Art Club.

A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, August 3, 2024 at Sebastian Cemetery, 1921 N Central Ave, Sebastian, FL 32958.
