U.S. 1 reopen following gas leak; leak repaired

Update: Sheriff’s deputies reopened U.S. 1 in both directions following a gas leak that led to road closures. Florida City Gas repaired the leak by Tuesday evening, sheriff’s officials said.

Earlier story:

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Deputies closed a portion of U.S. 1 in both directions and evacuated several businesses Tuesday morning following a reported gas leak. No injuries were reported.

“At 10:11 a.m., a call came in that a construction crew digging in the area struck a gas line,” said Sgt. Kevin Jaworski, a spokesperson with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office. “Due to the gas leak, an evacuation of the area took place between 41st and 45th streets along the east and west sides of U.S. 1.”

Florida City Gas was on scene working to repair the leak, Jaworski said. It was unknown when the roadway was expected to reopen.
