Veterans Memorial Island Sanctuary was awash in patriotism during the 2024 Memorial Day Ceremony to honor and remember the sacrifices of the brave men and women who have served in the U. S. Armed Forces.

Hosted by the Veterans Council of Indian River County, the ceremony was a poignant reminder of the cost of freedom, marked by heartfelt tributes, and a profoundly moving address by keynote speaker Cmdr. Michael Fortunato, MD, USN.

The event included the presentation of the colors, followed by a stirring rendition of the National Anthem, a wreath laying, the sounding of the ship’s bell, and a medley of patriotic songs performed by the Vero Beach High School Band.

After reading the names of local World War II veterans, living and departed, Michelle Dale, Gold Star Mothers president, said, “Thank you all for your service. Your comrades who sacrificed their all are looking down and celebrating your survival and being a living remembrance of their sacrifices.”

Fortunato spoke of the bravery and selflessness of all who have served, emphasizing the importance of always remembering their sacrifices.

“Memorial Day is more than just a holiday. It’s a sacred time to honor the memory of our fallen heroes and to support the families who bear the weight of their loss. It is a day to come together as a community, to remember, and to recommit ourselves to the ideals for which they gave their lives,” said Fortunato.

“Memorial Day is an occasion for both grief and celebration, reflecting on the tragic loss of life and recounting the courageousness of military service. For those who have served, Memorial Day holds the utmost significance while allowing our country to pay tribute and remember the lives that have been lost in defense of our nation,” he added.

The Battlefield Cross, erected at the front of the stage, bore the equipment, dog tags, helmet and boots of Jonathan Richard Clement, a U.S. Navy Petty Officer First Class Aircrewman and Rescue Swimmer who died July 31, 2018, while proudly serving his country.

The ceremony concluded with a final Roll Call, a rendition of “Taps,” and a Rifle Salute to honor the fallen heroes, a powerful reminder of the bravery and dedication of our veterans and a fitting tribute to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
