VERO BEACH — A 34-year-old man was jailed after a beating and stabbing that left a woman with severe injuries requiring surgery earlier this week, officers said. Police reviewed surveillance footage and described the incident as a vicious, unprovoked attack.
“After speaking with medical staff, it was reported that (the victim) received treatment for four lacerations to the lower intestines, two lacerations to the colon and the removal of her spleen,” Vero Beach police said in a report. The woman, along with police, identified the suspect as Trayvious Lewis Hullett, who was in a relationship with the woman, reports show.
Hullett, of the 200 block of 6th Drive, Vero Beach, was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Hullett was held Friday at the Indian River County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
Police responded to reports of the stabbing shortly before midnight on Tuesday in the 1800 block of 41st Avenue, northwest of Rosewood Magnet Elementary School. Officers saw the woman sitting on a couch near a dumpster.
The woman was holding the lower left side of her abdomen, police said. Indian River County Fire Rescue crews took the woman to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce, where she underwent surgery.
Detectives combed the area, where they found a blue folding knife with the blade extended in a dumpster, reports show. Police detectives also found a smashed cell phone and a trail of blood.
Officers obtained surveillance footage of the two-minute attack that happened near the dumpster. The video showed Hullett, the woman and a second man meet up.
The other man told police he left the area and was walking in between buildings when the stabbing occurred, reports show. At one point in the video, the woman used light from her cell phone to look for an item, police said.
Officers said Hullett then lunged at the woman, placed her in a chokehold and forced her into a corner. Hullett dragged the woman to the ground and repeatedly struck her, reports show.
Police said Hullett took the woman’s cell phone and smashed it on the ground. Hullett walked away briefly, but then returned as the woman stood up.
Officers said Hullett pushed the woman and then stabbed her in the abdomen. The video showed Hullett wipe off the knife, place it in the dumpster and then leave the area, reports show.
Police arrested Hullett on Thursday and booked him into the county jail. Hullett has an arraignment at 8:45 a.m. June 20, court records show.
