Coming Up! Ballet Vero’s ‘New Classics’ tops weekend lineup

Ballet Vero Beach presents its next program, “New Classics,” with “The West Side Story Suite” and “The Sleeping Princess” this weekend at the Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center, 1707 16th St. Tickets are $10 to $75. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 19, and 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 20. The company will present its Accessible/Family Friendly, hour-long performance of “The Sleeping Princess” 2 p.m. Sunday, April 21. Tickets to the Family Friendly performance are $10 plus handling. The ballet company will also have its annual fundraiser, Ballet Under the Stars, 6 p.m. Friday, April 26, at the Tree House Vero Beach. There will be cocktails, food, a live auction, dancing and a performance by the Ballet Vero Beach dancers. Tickets to the fundraiser are $175. For more information, visit BalletVeroBeach.org.

The A.E. Backus Museum will present a special gallery program, “Art of the Fantastic: Imaginative Illustration from the Korshak Collection,” from Saturday, April 20, to Sunday, April 28. Hours are 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 and free for members dressed in cosplay garb. The A.E. Backus Museum is at 500 North Indian River Dr., Fort Pierce. The Galleries at First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach will open its annual Spring Art Show with an opening reception 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 21. There will be works by three artists, Leslie Jordan, Barbara Desrosiers and Suzanne Roff. Jordan attended the School of Visual Arts in New York and explores photography. “The surrealism and beauty of unseen details evoke a sensory response in me,” Jordan says. Desrosiers has a degree in studio art from the University of Rhode Island and explores the spiritual side of life created with iPad, laptop and photoshop. Roff has worked as a psychologist and writer. She studied at the Parsons School of Design and the Art Students League of New York. The show runs through June 30. Admission is free. The Space Coast Symphony Orchestra will present “Disney’s Royals” Sunday afternoon. The concert will include Disney classics like those from “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Hunchback of Notre Dame” and much more. Soloists Kit Cleto and Samantha Barnes Daniel will perform. Daniel performs throughout Central Florida. She was in the young artists programs with the Chautauqua Opera and Arizona Opera and is a two-time National semi-finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. She performs with the Opera Orlando. Cleto attended the University of Central Florida and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has performed with the UCF Symphony Orchestra, Orlando Philharmonic, the Illinois Opera Theatre and in Italy who he performed the role of Tamino in “The Magic Flute.” Children who attend are invited to dress in their favorite royal attire. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door. Concertgoers 18 years and younger or those with college ID are admitted free. The Peacock Arts & Crafts Fair will bring more than 20 local artisans showcasing works in various media, including paint, wearable, wax and soap.
