Coming Up! Egg-cellent fun in the offing for Easter weekend

It’s all about Easter in the coming days. So get on your finest, the days are bright and beckoning you to get out.

First is the Flashlight Egg Hunt. This is designed for children 12 years and younger. It starts 8 p.m. Friday, March 29, at Dick Bird Park, 800 20th Ave. SW, Vero Beach. The event is free. For more information, visit IndianRiver.gov.

The Tipsy Turtle 2-Mile Race and Festival will feature a “Hatchling Dash,” live music, vendors, a raffle, an adult hydration station, a photo booth and Easter egg painting Saturday, March 30. The event begins at 8 a.m. with a race with the “Hatchling Dash” starting 8:30 a.m. The event will be held at Jaycee Beach Park, 4200 Ocean Dr., Vero Beach. Easter Cantatas are popular ways for churches to celebrate the Christian holy day. One of the more musically active churches in the area, the First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach will bring together its 45-member Chancel Choir. The church’s director and associate director of music and arts, Dr. Jacob Craig, will both lead the choir and accompany them on the piano and organ. Additional music will be provided by a chamber ensemble and handbell choir. The featured soloist is baritone John Toohey. The program will include the Easter portion of Handel’s “Messiah” and Michael W. Smith’s “Agnus Dei.” “The music is just beautiful,” Craig says. “And our Chancel Choir has been rehearsing it for weeks.” The Easter Cantata will be performed at the 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. services. “Up, Up & Away,” the Hibiscus Children’s Center 25th Annual Blue Ribbon Luncheon & Fashion Show, will be held Wednesday, April 3, at the Oak Harbor Club in Vero Beach. The event features professional models showing the latest fashions from local boutiques. There will also be a gourmet lunch, a champagne reception, raffle prize drawing and a silent auction. Tickets are $175. Funds raised will help the Hibiscus Children’s Center provide health counseling, educational services and career preparation and training for teenagers in need. The Indian River County Military Officers Association of America will host “An Evening to Remember” 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 4, at the Grand Harbor Golf Club, 4985 Club Terrace, Vero Beach. The event includes a formal four-course dinner with passed hors d’oeuvres and an open bar. Entertainment will feature Grammy Award-winning soprano Lisa Eden accompanied by pianist Jacob Craig. Tickets are $250. Funds raised will help support the completion of the World War II Tribute construction on Veterans Memorial Island Sanctuary in Vero Beach. The tribute will be a permanent parade stand with an educational element. The project was the undertaking of the Indian River Chapter of Military Officers Association of America. The cost is $250. On the horizon at Riverside Theatre: Plan ahead for the lecture by former Treasure Secretary Lawrence H. Summers, former president of Harvard University and one of the country’s leading economists. For the theatrically adventurous, the must-see of the season should be “Alan Cumming: Uncut” which comes to Fort Pierce’s Sunrise Theatre on Friday, April 5. Cumming is a celebrated entertainer and he will present his new cabaret show. Expect flippant, naughty, sophisticated and impish delights in this show. The award-winning Scottish entertainer/actor is known for his film, TV and stage roles. His TV performances include those in “The Good Wife,” “Instinct” and “Schmigadoon!” He currently is the host of NBC’s popular reality show “Traitors.” He frequently performs at New York City’s Café Carlyle and co-hosted the Tony Awards with Kristin Chenoweth. So, yeah, it’s rather a big thing that he’s bringing his show here.
