Coming Up! Gainesville Brass Quintet brings pizzazz to First Pres

The Gainesville Brass Quintet will perform this Sunday afternoon at First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach. The program will include works from Gabrielli to John Philip Sousa. There will also be the “Navy Hymn,” “Catwalk Blues,” “Salsa” and more. The Quintet is led by trumpet player Joseph Jamerson who founded the organization. The church’s director of music and arts, Jacob Craig, says the audiences are “always enthusiastic” when the group comes to town. This is the fifth time they will perform at the church. “Each concert has been better than the last, filled with energy, precision and the pure sound that is uniquely brass,” Craig says. The Vero Beach Theatre Guild opens the musical “9 to 5” this Friday. The show runs through March 24. The musical comedy concerns a trio of women co-workers who join forces to teach their harassing boss a lesson. It was written by Dolly Parton. The show is directed by Ben Earman. The Firefighters’ Fair is back and is loaded with reasons why you should go and take your family and friends as well. There will be rides, midway games, live entertainment, 4H competitions, competitions for hand crafts, quilting, baked goods, candies and more, a firefighter training show and, yes, lots of food. The opens p.m. Friday, March 8, and runs through Sunday, March 17. Regular opening hours are 5 p.m. weekdays and 1 p.m. weekends. The main exhibit building closes at 10 p.m. daily and 6 p.m. on the final Sunday. Admission is $10 general, and free to children under the age of 6 years. You can buy wristband ride specials for $35. The only animals allowed to accompany guests are those for handicapped assisted. The Emerson Center’s “E-Series” finishes its season this week when it presents Michael J. Tougias speaking on “In Harm’s Way: The Sinking of the USS Indianapolis.” This is described as “an incredible tale of survival … (a) … tragic event marked by the single loss of life at sea from a single ship in U.S. Navy history.” Tougias explores the stories of the survivors and what characteristics made them “victorious against all adversity.” He also explores the “rescue of the bounty.” Tougias is a New York Times bestselling author who holds lectures around the country. The lecture begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, at the Emerson Center (address above). Doors open one hour before the lecture. Admission is free but a $10 donation is appreciated. The Treasure Coast Chorale presents “20th Century Celebration Concert” this Sunday. The program includes well known songs encompassing a wide range of styles, from “Jeepers Creepers” to “Aquarius” and from singers like Frank Sinatra to Elvis Presley and more. “Kinky Boots” the musical runs through March 17 at Riverside Theatre. This is a fun, lively musical comedy with a tender touch. The storyline follows a man who may have to close his father’s shoe factory when, out of nowhere, a drag queen and his band of sashaying “Angels” saves the day.
