Motorcyclist killed in two-vehicle crash Monday in parking lot

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A motorcyclist died after he drove at a high speed through a parking lot, zoomed past a stop sign and slammed into another vehicle late Monday, sheriff’s officials said. Deputies later learned the motorcycle was stolen from Orange County, according to Sgt. Kevin Jaworski, a spokesperson with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.

“Upon the arrival of deputies, the motorcycle rider was unresponsive and CPR was performed,” Jaworski said.

The 40-year-old motorcyclist was taken by ambulance to Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead, officials said. Florida Highway Patrol troopers said the man was from Vero Beach, but public records showed he lived in Merritt Island in Brevard County.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 34-year-old man from Vero Beach, was not hurt.

The two-vehicle collision involving the 2021 Yamaha MT-03 motorcycle and a 2016 Dodge Durango happened about 6:02 p.m. in the Sam’s Club parking lot, south of State Road 60 and just east of 58th Avenue, highway troopers said. The motorcyclist was headed northbound while the Dodge’s driver traveled westbound.

Troopers said the driver of the Dodge made a left turn to head southbound. The motorcyclist failed to yield at the stop sign and did not see the Dodge’s driver make the turn.

Troopers said the motorcycle crashed into the Dodge.

Officials closed off the parking lot lane for several hours. The crash did not affect traffic on 58th Avenue or State Road 60, Jaworski said.

Jaworski said the Orange County Sheriff’s Office reported the motorcycle as stolen. Highway troopers continue to investigate the deadly crash.
