VERO BEACH — The coldest weather so far for the winter season will be felt Saturday and Sunday mornings, which will have plunging wind chill values in the mid-30s, forecasters said. Next Monday morning – New Year’s Day – will have a wind chill value in the mid-40s, said Kole Fehling, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Melbourne.
“The wind chill values (feels-like weather) are a combination of the wind and cold temperatures,” Fehling said.
Sporadic cold fronts and downpours of rain have made their mark this winter season in Vero Beach. The city broke another daily rainfall record on Monday – Christmas Day – at 1.08 inches, beating the previous record of 1.07 inches set on the same day in 1949, Fehling said.
Fehling said there were no reports of localized flooding in Vero Beach.
Another city on the Treasure Coast, Fort Pierce, also broke the daily rainfall record on Monday. Weather experts recorded 1.45 inches of rain, exceeding the old record of 1.06 inches set on the same day in 2002.
The warm weather Vero Beach residents felt on Tuesday won’t last long. A cold front will pass through the city Thursday and Friday, leaving a trail of cooler air behind it, Fehling said.
Thursday will have a 60 percent chance of showers with a high temperature near 64 degrees, which will dip to about 55 degrees in the evening, meteorologists said. Friday will be mostly sunny with a high near 65 degrees, which will drop near 49 degrees at night.
Saturday and Sunday will be sunny with highs in the lower 60s, which will fall to the upper 40s at night, forecasters said. The mornings for those days will see temperatures near the low 40s, Fehling said.
