Elaine Mae Hameister, 93, Vero Beach

September 2, 1930 – December 1, 2023

Elaine Mae Hameister, 93, entered into eternal rest on December 1, 2023. Elaine was born on September 2, 1930, in Mt. Clemens, MI, to Charles and Elsie Sanders. On February 20, 1954, she married her high school sweetheart, Robert (Bob) Hameister, who survives. The Hameister’s have enjoyed nearly 70 years of joyous, spiritual matrimony. Also surviving are daughters Susan and husband Randy Thomas and Cynthia and husband John Ross, and their extended families.

A polio victim at the age of 19, Elaine persevered with a gritty countenance and overcame numerous health obstacles. She received a BS Special Education degree from Eastern Michigan University and taught school in Flint, MI in the 1960’s.

Because of Bob’s employment with Fisher Body, Elaine spent her married life in Detroit, Flint and Birmingham MI and Cincinnati, OH. They retired to Petoskey, MI in 1988 and eventually relocated to Vero Beach in 1996. With Elaine, no one was a stranger and her friends were many!

Elaine was a strong proponent of volunteerism and served on a variety of boards and organizations including the YWCA, Petoskey MI Community Foundation, and most dear to her heart, Hospice and VNA in both Petoskey and Vero Beach. She was also a proud sister of the PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization).

A forever wordsmith, Elaine took great pleasure in completing the crossword, jumble and cryptogram on a daily basis. In later life, she authored numerous books including “Let’s Put Nice on Ice”, “What is Moving?”, and a favorite of many Vero Beach residents, “Yes Grandma, A Ladybug Went to Bethlehem”.

Elaine’s creative, clever and witty repartee will be greatly missed.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the entire staff of Renaissance Senior

Living and the VNA Hospice community, with special thanks to nurse Margery, for their care and kindness.

Elaine’s life journey was made more comfortable by the joyous companionship of Helen Muzaki, Victoria Dobson, Meeka Gooden, and her special angel, Lashanda Williams. We are forever grateful.

A memorial service for Elaine will be held Saturday, December 9, at 10:00 AM, at Christ Church Vero Beach, 667 20th Street, Vero Beach, Fathers Keith Allen and Hunter VanWagenen, officiants.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial gift to the VNA and Hospice Foundation, Vero Beach or Christ Church of Vero Beach.
