SEBASTIAN — A man in his 70s died after police said he shot himself in the city hall parking lot on Election Day. The Sebastian man had called officers and threatened to commit suicide just moments before he carried out the act, Sebastian Police Capt. Tim Wood said.

Wood said the shooting had no connection to the municipal election underway. Sebastian City Hall was not a polling place, Wood said.

Police have not released the man’s name.

Sebastian police responded to reports of gunfire about 5:14 p.m. Tuesday at the city hall parking lot, located off Friendship Lane. Wood said a few witnesses saw different parts of the incident.

Officers found the man’s body outside of a vehicle that belonged to a family member, Wood said. Police recovered a handgun found near the man’s body.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. Officers ruled the man’s death as a suicide, Wood said.

An autopsy will be performed on the body. Police continue to investigate the death.
