Charles Richard Harvin, 87, Vero Beach

March 20, 1936 – August 2, 2023

Charles Richard Harvin, 87, passed away August 2, 2023 at VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach, FL.

He was born in Newark, NJ to Charles and Marie Harvin. He moved to Bernardsville, NJ in 1956 and in 1993, he moved to Vero Beach.

Charles was President of Harvin & Co. in Kenilworth, NJ until 1987. He was a commercial pilot accumulating over 5,000 flight hours. In 1989, he was dealing Black Jack in Atlantic City, which he proclaimed was the best job he ever had.  Eventually he retired permanently to Vero Beach.

He attended the University of Missouri, Columbia majoring in Business, where he met the love of his life. He was a member of the Rotary International serving as a District Secretary, a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach and had sung in the Treasure Coast Chorale for 10 years.

Preceded in death by his sons Harold Gordon Harvin and Charles “Rik” Harvin and sister Gladys Schaffermoth. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Patricia G. Harvin; daughter, Vannakay Hurnevich; grandchildren Leanna Harvin and Reed G. Harvin.

James Dineen Burden, 94, Vero Beach

October 5, 1928 – August 1, 2023

James Dineen Burden died peacefully on August 1, 2023 in Vero Beach, Florida.  He was born in Englewood, New Jersey, on October 5. 1928.

He was the son of Alexander and Nora (Dineen) Burdenski.  The family subsequently moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in January 1931. He attended grade school and St. Ignatius High School where he graduated with honors. Jim received his higher education at the University of Notre Dame where he received his bachelor’s degree cum laude and at Stanford University where he received his master’s degree. His first career was as a Navy fighter and attack pilot.  He saw combat in both Korea and Viet Nam, flying a total of 154 combat missions. He was Commanding Officer of Attack Squadron 25 in the time frame 1966 – 1967. He accumulated 754 carrier arrested landings in the course of his Navy career.  He was president of his class at the Naval War College, Newport, RI 1973-74.  He received many service and combat awards including the Legion of Merit.

After Jim retired from the Navy as a Captain in June 1980 he joined an aerospace company, now part of British Aerospace. He worked closely with Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in the research and development of search and fire control radars. A highlight of the period was working on the fleet introduction of the F-18 fighter. After sixteen years with the company, he retired in 1996.

After being married in 1997, he and his wife Laura moved to Vero Beach in 1998.   They resided at The Moorings where he was an avid tennis and golf player.  He was active with the Knights of Columbus, serving a term as Grand Knight of Holy Cross Council 12141. He was also active at Holy Cross Catholic Church where he served as an usher. He participated in such community activities as Habitat for Humanity, Chairman of the Holy Cross Golf Committee and various other community service activities. He has served as president of the Board of Directors of the Windward Condominium Association at the Moorings.

He has also been an active member of the Old Tailhookers, a local Vero Beach organization that meets on the third Thursday of each month.  The basic qualification is landing aboard an aircraft carrier and successfully engaging a tail hook.  He was also a member of the Notre Dame Club of Vero Beach.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Jean, in 1970, as well as three brothers, Tom Burdenski, Bob Burdenski and Don Burdenski. He is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years, Laura, son James Dineen, Jr (Mary) of Ebony, Virginia, daughters Kerry Rice (Patrick) of New Bern, North Carolina, Kathleen Burden of Richmond, Virginia, Leslie Askew of Ocean Side, California, step-son Alex Clark (Amy) of Bethesda, MD, eight grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.  He is also survived by his sister Helen Burdenski, SND and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.

Rusty L. Maxwell, 66 

November 9, 1956 – August 1, 2023

Mr. Rusty L. Maxwell, 66, died August 1, 2023, at Sebastian River Medical Center in Sebastian, FL.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

Viewing will be held 10:00 AM on Saturday August 5, 2023, Roseland Global Methodist Church, 12962 Roseland Road, Roseland, Florida 32957.

A Funeral Service to celebrate the life of Rusty will be held 11:00 AM on Saturday August 5, 2023, at Roseland Global Methodist Church with Rev. Jerry Milner, officiating.
