Athletes swam, peddled and put their running feet to the pavement during the third annual Vero Beach Triathlon. Participants gathered bright and early at South Beach Park, eager to try and best their own times and those of everyone else as they competed in one of several challenging options: Sprint Triathlon, Sprint Duathlon (bike and run), Olympic Triathlon, Olympic Aquabike (swim and bike), Sprint Triathlon Relay and Olympic Triathlon Relay.

Roughly 250 athletes, ranging in age from 20 to 75 and of varying skill levels, competed on a course that began with an Atlantic Ocean swim, a bike ride along A1A, and a beachside run along a scenic route. The overall winner of the Olympic Triathlon was Luis-William Liebig of Melbourne, with Caitlin Fielding of Hobe Sound winning the women’s title.

Race director Walter Harnischfeger enlisted the assistance of Vero Beach Lifeguards, the Vero Beach Police Department and Indian River County Fire/Rescue to ensure everyone’s safety, and Sommer Sports of Clermont to manage the race.
