Kalyan (Kay) Sikdar, 76, Vero Beach
March 19, 1947 – June 22, 2023
Kalyan (Kay) Sikdar, 76, of Vero Beach, Florida passed away peacefully after a short illness on June 22, 2023, at VNA Hospice House with his beloved wife Dorene and other family members at his side. He had offered many personal goodbyes to family and friends, and he was ready for his gentle departure.

Kalyan is survived by his wife Dorene (Erdevig) Sikdar, son Kieran (Audra) Sikdar, sister Nina Mukherji, brother Amit (Carla) Sikdar, and many relatives and friends, all of whom loved him very much.

Kay was born on March 19, 1947, the second of three children, to Arabinda and Jayanti Sikdar in Howrah, India. When he was young, his dream job was to “find a way to become rich by flying kites.” He kept this playful spirit throughout many years of hard work and success. He was a student at St. Vincents in Asansol, India and graduated from Osmania University in Hyderabad in 1971, with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering. Thanks to the gracious sponsorship of his sister and brother-in-law, Nina and Anil Mukherji, Kalyan fulfilled a dream and came to the United States where he obtained his MBA from Widener University. He worked his way up from unloading trucks at Sperry Univac, to Portfolio Manager at MetLife Real Estate Investments in Oakbrook, Illinois, to Senior Asset Management Officer in Real Estate Investments at State Teachers Retirement System in Columbus, Ohio. After his retirement, he fulfilled his dream to live near the ocean and he and Dorene moved to Vero Beach, Florida where they felt most fortunate to live near dear family members.

Kay spread joy no matter the circumstance or struggle. He was known for his laughter and jokes that would lighten the most fraught situation. Kalyan also had a quiet generosity and would not hesitate to help anyone in need.

A friend/colleague (all colleagues were friends) described him thus: ” I can honestly say that I never met anyone like him before. He was the kindest and gentlest person that I ever had the great pleasure of knowing and I will treasure his memory always. And what a phenomenal sense of humor and great outlook on life. Never a bad word about anyone. Whenever I had the occasion to describe him to someone, I would always say, “He was a gentleman and more importantly, a gentle man.” And from another colleague: “You brightened my day every day and made any problems I was dealing with seem not important to life. You have taught me to live each day to its fullest.” A friend, “Kay was one of a kind, with the kindest heart and infectious personality.”  Another friend, “The Angels are the lucky ones!! No one can replace him!!”

This dear man will be missed by many. Dorene and the family thank all who have shared memories and beautiful comments on what he meant to them. May we all be better for having known him.

Donations in his honor may be sent to a local non-profit organization:
