INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 38-year-old bicyclist was killed Wednesday after he did not yield at a red light and was struck by an oncoming minivan, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said.

“(The bicyclist) failed to stop for the red traffic light,” troopers said in a crash report. This is the fifth fatal crash to occur within a month in Indian River County.

It was unclear if the other driver, a 44-year-old woman, was also hurt.

The wreck, involving the black bicycle and the silver 2011 Toyota Sienna minivan, happened about 6:44 a.m. at the Old Dixie Highway and 4th Street intersection. The bicyclist was riding to the left of stopped traffic as he traveled along the northbound lane on Old Dixie Highway, approaching the red light at the intersection.

The Toyota driver was traveling in the right lane on eastbound 4th Street, approaching a green traffic signal, troopers said. The bicyclist did not yield at the red light and crossed into the path of the Toyota, causing a collision.

The bicyclist was taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce, where doctors pronounced him dead, troopers said. The deadly crash remains under investigation.
