Florida Highwaymen: Meet Hezekiah Baker Jr. at our June Auction!

Vero Beach, FL – June 6, 2023 – Treasure Coast Collectibles and Manor Auctions proudly present a special guest of honor for its monthly auction at the Indian River Mall in Vero Beach, Florida, on Saturday, June 24th: Hezekiah Baker Jr., son of the original Hall of Fame Florida Highwaymen artist, Hezekiah Baker Sr.

Mr. Baker Jr will be available for a Meet and Greet during the reception, which runs from noon to 1pm prior to the auction. Attendees will have a chance to personally interact with him and understand his inspirations and artistic journey.

Manor Auctions continue to serve as a significant platform for the vibrant heritage of Florida landscape art, showcasing over 100 Highwaymen and other local art pieces for bid every month. The auction commences at 1pm, offering collectors and art enthusiasts alike a rare opportunity to acquire some of these cherished pieces.

Hezekiah Baker Jr, following in his father’s artistic footsteps, took to painting after serving in both the US Navy and US Air Force for a combined 22 years. Graduating from Fort Pierce Central High School in 1984, his journey has been remarkable and inspiring.

“After retiring, I found myself drawn to the canvas, oil paint, and brush. I began painting landscapes and seascapes, as well as scenes from my travels around the world,” Baker Jr explained. His work encompasses a variety of subjects, including hibiscus, royal poinciana, tabebuia, sunsets, and Riomar scenes that his father initially painted in the 1960s.

About the Florida Highwaymen: The Florida Highwaymen were a group of 26 African-American artists renowned for their vibrant depictions of Florida’s untouched landscapes from the early 1950s through the 1980s. Despite economic and racial adversity, these artists created striking artwork that they sold directly from their vehicles along the highways. Today, an original Florida Highwaymen painting can fetch anywhere from $5000 to $10000 or more, reflecting the enduring appreciation for their work.

Hezekiah Baker Sr, before his death in 2007, was quoted as saying, “Don’t let them forget us.” His words still resonate with fans and collectors who value the important legacy of the Florida Highwaymen.
