The Felix Poppell American Legion Post 39

Tuesday April 11, 2023

The Vero Beach American Legion is proud to support funding the WWII Tribute for Veterans Memorial Island Sanctuary. Presenting the $10,000 donation is First Vice Commander, Peter Rossi, and Sons of the American Legion Finance Officer, Richard Molander. The American Legion was established following World War I. Post 39 is named in honor of Felix Poppell. Seaman Poppell of Winter Beach was a Coast Guard Cutter Tampa crewmember. All were lost at sea when his ship was torpedoed September 26, 1918, by a German submarine. Felix is among nine WWI veterans recognized on the island.

Funds will provide proper honors for the veterans who rallied to the nation’s call after Pearl Harbor. Forty-two of the “Greatest Generation” made the supreme sacrifice from Indian River County. In addition, over one hundred from beyond died in Vero Beach Naval Air Station training. The WWII Tribute will be a lasting legacy promoting selfless service to the country. Each year thousands visit the lagoon sanctuary for public and private ceremonies honoring the service and sacrifice of those who defend the nation. The Military Officer Association of America Indian River Chapter is leading the successful effort. Contributions for the WWII Tribute may be made to the Cultural Council of Indian River County – WWII Tribute.
