Vero woman killed in head-on crash Saturday in Melbourne

MELBOURNE — A 67-year-old Vero Beach woman was killed in a two-vehicle wreck over the weekend, police said. Officers said the other motorist, a 61-year-old Palm Bay man, was traveling at a high rate of speed moments before the head-on collision.

“Drugs and/or alcohol are believed to be a factor in this crash,” Melbourne police said in a statement. “The crash is still under investigation.”

It was unclear if police were expected to make an arrest in the case.

The two-vehicle wreck, involving a white 2017 Nissan Titan pickup truck and a blue 2021 Toyota RAV4 sports utility vehicle, happened Saturday near North Harbor City Boulevard and Nelson Avenue. Officers learned the man was traveling northbound in the Nissan along North Harbor City Boulevard at a high speed.

Police said the man was driving in the outside lane and lost control while abruptly changing lanes. The Nissan veered into the opposite travel lane and struck the Toyota, driven by the woman, officers said.

Brevard County Fire Rescue crews took the woman to an area hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead, according to Melbourne police. It was not immediately clear if the man was also hospitalized.

Anyone with information on the deadly crash should contact Melbourne police Traffic Homicide Investigator Officer Mark Whitright at 321-616-6116.
