Expansive Indian Trails home overlooks nature preserve

A canopy of moss-covered, century-old oaks lines the streets of the Indian Trails community, setting the stage for the Southern coastal-style home at 730 Canoe Trail, which sits on a cul-de-sac at the end of a charming lane.

The elegant estate home is set back from the street at the top of the circle drive on a park-like property of about 1.3 acres.

To ensure you don’t get lost, there’s a miniature lighthouse near the front of the house, metaphorically lighting the way home. With a spiral staircase inside, the lighthouse tower is an excellent playhouse for the children to explore and have adventures, a spot for teens to get some much-desired privacy or a work room for the owners.

A wide porch graces the front of the house. There is plenty of space to sit on the swing and enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning as you watch the sunrise.

“It’s so nice and private,” says Janyne Kenworthy, ONE Sotheby’s International Realty broker-associate, standing on the porch, noting that there aren’t neighbors on the house’s southern side.

Double, glass-paned doors with sidelights and transoms welcome guests – and sunshine – inside.

Straight ahead is a cozy seating area that opens onto the courtyard through a wall of glass that allows you can take in views of the pool and nature preserve beyond.

While the home is elegantly appointed with wainscoting, vaulted ceilings, crown molding, built-ins, window seats, plantation shutters and a variety of attractive ceiling fixtures, it somehow emits a cozy, family vibe.

“The house was renovated in 2012 by Cal Builders,” notes Kenworthy.

The owner’s suite and a guest bedroom with a private bath are located in the northern wing of the house. The impressive owner’s suite overlooks the pool and has two walk-in closets; in the bath are a soaking tub, a vanity and dual sinks. Access to the courtyard and pool area is an attractive bonus.

The formal dining room is just off the foyer in the southern wing. A wet bar is situated between the dining room and kitchen, convenient to areas used when entertaining guests.

The laundry room, powder room, garage access, a great room with soaring ceilings and a breakfast nook are adjacent to the kitchen, with the great room and nook enlarging the communal space.

A gas fireplace is centered between glass doors on the southern wall, so you can cozy up inside or step outside to the private courtyard to relax around the fire pit.

An abundance of windows allows for brightly lit spaces in the flowing floor plan. “It’s a big family home,” says Kenworthy, adding that it’s suitable for multigenerational living.

The gourmet kitchen features a substantial island with plenty of additional countertop space, high-end appliances and soft-close drawers. The kids can have a snack at the island counter or in the breakfast nook where you can keep an eye on them while they do homework and you prep for dinner.

Upstairs are four bedrooms and three bathrooms – one a shared Jack and Jill bath and the others en suite – so there are lots of options for family and friends. One of the bedrooms has a screened sunset balcony, a lovely spot to enjoy a glass of wine while watching the sun go down.

A den and step-up reading room with clouds painted on the ceiling are located centrally in the upstairs space. The owners currently use this flex space as a viewing room. You can sit in the den and watch a movie on the large screen in the reading room.

“There is a lot of flexible space in the house. There’s room for everyone,” says Kenworthy.

Above the three-bay garage, a guest house with private access is ideal for long-term guests or live-in help. With a kitchenette, walk-in closet and full bath, it permits guests to come and go as they please without having to enter the central part of the house.

There’s access to the outdoors from most rooms on the first floor, optimal for indoor-outdoor living and expanding the livable area of the already spacious house.

Outside are a screened porch, courtyard, covered lounging areas, swimming pool, outdoor shower, and gazebo with a hammock – all in an expansive backyard that abuts the preservation area. Lush landscaping and a sea grape hedge surround the pool for an added measure of privacy.

The yard is a quiet haven for the family as well as the birds and mammals that make their home in the preservation area, which provides a dense, jungle-like buffer between the house, the Jungle Trail and Indian River Lagoon beyond.

Indian Trails is a gated, 80-acre, ocean-to-river community. It offers boat docks (available with this property), an oceanside clubhouse, a neighborhood clubhouse, tennis courts with a tennis pro, playground, community pool and exercise room. The seclusion of the neighborhood belies its proximity to nearby shopping, dining, cultural and environmental treasures.
