INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Troopers are investigating a deadly Friday crash that claimed the life of an Okeechobee man who officials said rode a bicycle into the path of an oncoming vehicle. Authorities pronounced the bicyclist, 42, dead at the scene, according to Florida Highway Patrol.
“(The bicyclist) failed to yield the right of way and traveled into the path of vehicle 1 (a sedan),” troopers said in a crash report. The sedan’s driver, a 54-year-old Vero Beach woman, and its passenger, a 15-year-old Vero Beach girl – were not injured, officials said.
The wreck involving the sedan and the bicyclist happened about 5:30 p.m. along Old Dixie Highway near 4th Street, west of U.S. 1, highway troopers said. The driver of the sedan was traveling northbound on Old Dixie Highway approaching 4th Street.
Troopers said the bicyclist began heading west from the Chevron gas station on 4th Street onto Old Dixie Highway. The front of the sedan struck the bicyclist, knocking him to the ground, officials said.
The collision led authorities to briefly block the intersection. Deputies and fire rescue crews were at the scene.
The wreck remains under investigation.
