VERO BEACH, November 7, 2022 – United Way of Indian River County’ second Powered by Purpose featured local mental health experts to address the challenges residents are facing, especially in a post pandemic society where there is a mental health surge.
Hosted at Northern Trust, the event was a chance for concerned citizens and supporters of United Way to learn more about local challenges regarding mental health and work together to find solutions. Speakers included Dr. Philip Cromer from the Mental Health Association, Brett Hall from the Mental Health Collaborative and Anne Posey from Cleveland Clinic.
Some of the challenges highlighted by the speakers included access to providers, long waits for appointments, increased need for children’s services and high housing costs deterring potential providers from moving to the area. Despite all these challenges, progress has been made through collaborations between local nonprofits, funders and healthcare providers.
One such collaboration is the Mental Health Intensive Outpatient Program funded through United Way, John’s Island Community Service League, the Indian River Hospital District and the Indian River Community Foundation which provides a continuum of care for local adolescents needing behavioral health services. Its goal is to prevent or transition teens from inpatient care.
“Access to health services and support is one of three impact areas United Way fights for, not just in times of crisis, but every day,” stated Meredith Egan, United Way CEO. “Over the years, our investment in mental health support across all ages has only grown and our commitment to finding solutions and preventative interventions continues to expand.”
Another community-wide initiative highlighted was the Unstruggle campaign, recently launched by the Mental Health Collaborative, which focuses on mental health awareness and literacy. It’s goal is to convey that mental health symptoms are common, treatments are helpful and there are services available in Indian River County. Those in need can contact the McCabe Connections Center and those wanting to get involved or learn more can participate in a Mental Health First Aid course.
The Powered by Purpose series hosted by United Way of Indian River County features community leaders and experts speaking about different topics of interest to help attendees learn more about an issue, community challenges, collaboration, resources, and other ways to get involved.
