INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A man was jailed after deputies said he threatened to kill a woman and her three-year-old daughter with a butcher knife at a residence early Sunday. The woman and child escaped the home before the man barricaded himself inside and had a standoff with deputies, officials said.
Edgerrin James Billie, 22, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest without violence and violation of probation. Billie was held Monday at the Indian River County Jail without bond.
Jail booking records showed that Billie had an Okeechobee address. Sheriff’s officials said Billie lived with his girlfriend and her daughter at a home in Florida Ridge in south county.
Indian River County sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call Sunday morning at Billie’s residence. The woman and girl were able to run from the home, go to a nearby 7-Eleven convenience store and dial 911, sheriff’s officials said.
Deputies said when they arrived at the home, Billie refused to come out. The sheriff’s SWAT unit, Crisis Negotiations Team, and drone unit surrounded the residence as Billie hid inside with the butcher knife, officials said.
Deputies were able to safely remove Billie from the home, officials said.
“With no regard for anyone’s life but his own, Billie threatened the life of his family and neighbors while he barricaded himself in his home with a weapon,” Sheriff Eric Flowers said in a statement. “This could have ended with tragedy, but thanks to the brave response of our deputies and detectives, this incident ended with a violent individual in custody.”
Billie was arrested and booked into the county jail. Billie has an arraignment at 8:45 a.m. Dec. 2, court records show.
