The Space Coast Symphony Orchestra presents a special benefit concert, A Heart for Ukraine celebrating the rich cultural history of Ukraine, its indomitable spirit, and also the generosity of all of us who are moved to lessen the suffering of the Ukrainian people. Ukranian clarinetist, Dmitry Perevertailenko joins prominent pianist, Leslie Spotz in a program featuring the music of Ukranian composers including Verbytsky and Kashyrtsev, and will also highlight popular works from Chopin and Verdi. Cellist, Paul Fleury will also lend his talents to the program performing a beautiful transcription of “Melody for String Quartet” from Ukranian composer, Myroslav Stkoryk from the 1982 film, The High Pass. The concert closes with Fleury joining Perevertailenko and Spotz to perform Beethoven’s rousing Trio in B flat, Opus 11.
Perevertailenko is currently taking care of his parents, sister, and niece who have all fled Kharkiv, Ukraine. This concert will benefit Dmitry’s family with both current needs and relocation assistance back to Ukraine.
A long-time friend of pianist Dr. Leslie Spotz, Sara Ann Conkling was touched when she heard about Dmitry’s family. After a little thought, the Titusville resident contacted the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra about the possibility of holding a benefit concert in Florida.
“I knew Aaron had a big heart, and we are very grateful to the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra for their sponsorship of this benefit concert,” said Conkling. “Many Americans have given generously to charities that are on the ground, helping many people in Ukraine. This is a chance to do something more personal.”
Ms. Conkling sums it up simply.
“We can’t help every family in Ukraine, but we can help this family.”
