VERO BEACH — A 60-year-old man was arrested after police said he shot at two vehicles – injuring both drivers – at a parking garage early Saturday. Both victims – a man and a woman – had non-life threatening injuries, Vero Beach police spokesperson Master Officer Darrell Rivers said.

The man who was shot was released from the hospital Saturday morning, Rivers said. An update on the woman’s condition was not immediately available.

Police SWAT team officers found the suspected shooter – identified by officers as Aaron Paul Bishop – at his home and negotiated with him by phone to step outside, Rivers said. Bishop, of the 500 block of Royal Palm Boulevard, surrendered without incident and was taken to the Vero Beach Police Department for questioning.

“The subject is in custody and there is no known danger to the public,” Rivers said. The motive behind the incident was unclear.

Bishop was charged with two counts of shooting or throwing a deadly missile, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery with great bodily harm, jail records show. Bishop was held Sunday at the Indian River County Jail without bond.

The shooting happened about 4:30 a.m. at a parking garage near the Kimley-Horn engineering consultant building, not far from Bishop’s home. Rivers said a woman who worked as a security guard had just finished her shift and was about to drive home.

The woman’s boyfriend, who also worked security, got in another vehicle to follow his girlfriend to her residence. Rivers said Bishop came from the stairs, opened fire on both vehicles and ran from the scene.

Details on how many times the victims were struck by gunfire were not immediately available.

The man and woman were taken by ambulance to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce, Indian River County Assistant Fire Chief Sean Gibbons said.

Rivers said police reviewed surveillance footage of the shooting and were able to identify Bishop as the man who opened fire. The police SWAT team went to Bishop’s home about 1:45 p.m., surrounded the residence and detained him.

It was unclear if police recovered the gun used in the shooting.
