Rosario, Gibbs headed to runoff; Flescher, Loar win commission seats

School Board Incumbent Jacqueline Rosario and political newcomer Cynthia Gibbs will head to a runoff for the District 2 seat in November during the general election.

Rosario, who garnered more than 17,000 votes, was the top-vote getter in the Primary Election for her race with a 46.82 percentage, the supervisor of elections website showed. Gibbs, the runner-up, had more than 9,000 votes with a 26.38 percentage.

School board races are nonpartisan. School board member candidates must win at least 50 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff before the general election.

LaDonna Corbin, who also ran for the school board District 2 seat, garnered more than 6,000 votes with a 17.46 percentage. Another District 2 candidate, Josh Post, had more than 3,000 votes with a 9.35 percentage.

Teri Barenborg, School District of Indian River County Chairperson, won the seat for school board District 4, garnering more than 20,000 votes with a 57.46 percentage. Her opponent, political newcomer Thomas Kenny, brought in more than 15,000 votes with a 42.54 percentage.

Dr. Gene Posca ran unopposed for a seat for school board District 1 and will start his term in November.

Deryl Loar, a former Indian River County Sheriff, and Joe Flescher won the races for seats on the Indian River County Commission, the supervisor of elections website showed. Flescher, an incumbent, was elected to District 2 while Loar was elected to District 4.

Flescher had more than 23,000 votes, with a 65.70 percentage, compared to his opponent Elizabeth Siebert, who had more than 12,000 votes and a 34.30 percentage.

Loar had more than 14,000 votes, with a 39.73 percentage, surpassing the other District 4 candidates Thomas Lowther and Joann Binford, the supervisor of elections site showed. Lowther brought in a little more than 12,000 votes and a 34.15 percentage, and Binford had more than 9,000 votes and a 26.12 percentage.

Vero Beach Mayor Robbie Brackett won the Republican primary race for state representative District 34, having more than 13,000 votes and a 60.31 percentage. His opponent, Karen Hiltz, brought in more than 8,000 votes with a 39.69 percentage.

Brackett will face Democrat Karen Greb of Sebastian in the Nov. 8 general election.

For Tuesday’s election, there were 118,167 registered voters, 38,407 ballots counted and a 32.5 percent voter turnout.
