Woman killed in vehicle rollover crash on I-95

Update: All lanes on Interstate 95 reopened by 8 p.m. Sunday, according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.

Earlier story:

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 69-year-old Tavernier woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash after her Mazda Miata overturned on Interstate 95 Sunday afternoon, officials said. The incident led officials to close all northbound lanes and the left southbound lane on I-95 in the area of the wreck, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

Highway troopers are no longer releasing the names of crash victims for privacy reasons.

The wreck happened at 2:10 p.m. at the 151-mile post on northbound I-95. The woman was traveling in the Mazda on southbound I-95, officials said.

For an unknown reason, the woman lost control of the Mazda. The sports car veered toward the median and rolled over, troopers said.

The Mazda landed upright in the right lane on northbound I-95. The woman – who was the only person in the vehicle – was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers and fire rescue crews said.

Authorities closed the interstate and diverted northbound traffic off State Road 60 at the 147-mile post. It was unclear when the roadway was expected to reopen.

Troopers said the woman was wearing a seat belt at the time of the deadly crash.

Showers and thunderstorms had rolled through the county Sunday afternoon. The evening will have a 60 percent chance of rain, according to the National Weather Service in Melbourne.
