Education Foundation Charity Shoot hits fundraising target

The weather was ideal for the shooters who gathered at the Windsor Gun Club at Vero Beach Clay Shooting Sports for the 20th annual Education Foundation Charity Shoot, testing their skill in a friendly team competition, while supporting the various programs of the nonprofit Education Foundation of Indian River County.

Traditionally the last shoot of the Windsor season, its gun pro Nicky Szápáry once again provided the instruction needed and monitored the overall safety of the shooters, a randomly drawn mix of newbies and experts. Szápáry, Windsor Gun Club director since 2002, competed in the 1980 Olympics in Moscow and the 1984 Olympic games in Los Angeles.

Scores for the three-person teams were based on combined results in the Driven Game Simulation – shooters have 40 shells and about 4 minutes to hit 100 clay discs launched into the air by mechanized traps – and Quadruple Three Stand competitions – with 30 targets launched in sets of four. Mulligans, always a popular option, helped participants with their scores and served as a great additional fundraising tool.

Once scores were tallied, winners were announced during a rustically elegant BBQ lunch catered by Windsor.

The Education Foundation operates as a funding source and as a service provider for public, private and homeschooled students as well as teachers, working to enhance the community’s investment in local schools and achieve excellence for students and educators.

Registration is currently open for its free STEP into Kindergarten program, which promotes school readiness for eligible students who have completed a Voluntary Pre-K program and will be attending kindergarten at one of the county’s 10 Title I elementary schools.

Other programs include High Impact Grants, funding innovative school or classroom initiatives; the Indian River Regional Science and Engineering Fair, open to all K-12 students in the county; the Sneaker Exchange, which ensures that economically disadvantaged students have socks and sneakers; and Vision for Reading, a vision screening program for children identified by the school district’s health services coordinator.
