String Quartet Plays Schubert, Vaughan Williams
Free chamber concert features players from SCSO
(VERO BEACH, FL) May 23, 2022 – Musicians from the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra will present two classic works for string quartet on Sunday, June 5 at 3:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach, 520 Royal Palm Blvd., 32960. Death and the Maiden is titled after the important Schubert chamber work of the same name, which will be performed by Joni Roos and Konstantin Dmitrov on violin, Michael de Jesus on viola and Paul Fleury on cello. Considered one of the pillars in Western chamber music, scholars debate whether each movement of Schubert’s String Quartet No. 14 in D minor is about a different episode in the mythic process of death and resurrection. The quartet was not published until after the composer’s death. String Quartet No. 1 in G minor by Vaughan Williams was written in 1908, while the composer was in Paris studying with Ravel. Commentators point to Ravel’s influence in the quartet, citing lighter instrumental textures in Vaughan Williams’ music written after his return from Paris. This helps compensate the very talented musicians for the time spent rehearsing and performing for the public.”
