St. Lucie’s utility expansion sets stage for new development

The St. Lucie County Utility Department plans to build large water and sewer plants to serve the burst of new development planned in the northeast corner of the county.

The county Utility Department is currently designing two million-gallon-per-day water treatment and wastewater treatment plants in the vicinity of Indrio and Taylor Dairy roads, said county spokesman Erick Gill.

The Utility Department already partnered with the developer of the 7-Eleven at 7310 Indrio Road to extend a sewer line to the 4,239-square-foot convenience store and gas station completed in 2021, Gill said.

In addition, the Utility Department has extended water and sewer lines the length of Indrio Road to the Interstate 95 interchange, Gill said.

Those lines have set the stage for proposals to develop the Visions at Indrio project – 2,400 residences and 1 million square feet of business space – at Johnston Road and a Publix Supermarket with a shopping center at Emerson Road.

The county Utilities Department is also prepared to work with Lennar Home to extend water and sewer lines to the Seagrove project, which envisions 655 houses on a 281-acre parcel between U.S. 1 and the Indian River Lagoon, just south of the Indian River County line, Gill said.

Another major project that would need to connect to county water and sewer utilities is the proposed MMR RV Park, a gated recreational vehicle park with 80 lots, a 2,690-square-foot clubhouse with a swimming pool and a 2,176-square-foot office on Turnpike Feeder Road, near U.S. 1, county records show.

The county Utilities Department is also prepared to upgrade water and sewer lines to the Treasure Coast International Airport when the demand arises, Gill said.
