Man shot in back overnight; suspect in custody

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A suspect was in custody following an incident overnight that left a 52-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the back, officials said. The man had knocked on a door in the Woodlawn Manor community and asked for help before he was shot, Indian River County Assistant Fire Chief Sean Gibbons said.

It was not immediately known why the man was asking for help. Further details on the man and the suspect were not immediately available.

The motive for the shooting was unclear.

Indian River County sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a shooting about 12:23 a.m. in the 500 block of 4th Street, just west of U.S. 1, sheriff’s officials said. The man and the suspect were involved in a physical altercation.

The suspect grabbed a firearm and shot the man, sheriff’s officials said.

The man was taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce, Gibbons said. Deputies found the suspect and placed him in custody.
