Brush fire near I-95 fully contained, officials say

State and county fire crews have fully contained a brush fire that briefly closed northbound Interstate 95 Friday, officials said. No injuries were reported and no structures were threatened, Indian River County Assistant Fire Chief David Rattray said.

The flames – which started off at 20 acres – were 100 percent contained at 16 acres Friday evening, Florida Forest Service officials said. The outside lane on northbound I-95 was blocked for several hours and had reopened by 10:30 p.m., authorities said.

Fire Rescue crews responded to the blaze about 4:30 p.m. at the border line between Indian River and Brevard counties. Indian River County Fire Rescue and Forest Service crews were knocking down small fires on both sides of the interstate, Rattray said.

Forest Service firefighters have two bulldozers working to keep the flames contained. The fire is located near Buffer Preserve Drive and the C-54 canal, Forest Service crews said.

The origin of the fire was not immediately known. No further details were immediately available.
