1 dead in two-vehicle crash near airport; 43rd Avenue reopen

Update:43rd Avenue has reopened after being closed for several hours following a fatal two-vehicle crash Saturday.

VERO BEACH — One person was killed in a two-vehicle crash that blocked 43rd Avenue in both directions Saturday, officials said. The deadly head-on wreck happened along a curve on the roadway.

Further details about the individual who died were not immediately available. Others involved in the collision were not seriously hurt, Indian River County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Steve Greer said.

The wreck happened about 10 a.m. on 43rd Avenue near Airport West Drive, just west of the Vero Beach Regional Airport, Indian River County sheriff’s officials said. One vehicle was traveling southbound on 43rd Avenue while the other was headed northbound on the same road, Vero Beach police spokesperson Master Officer Darrell Rivers said.

Both vehicles collided, killing one of the drivers, Rivers said.

Police closed north and southbound 43rd Avenue from 41st Street to 26th Street. The road was expected to be shut down for several hours, Rivers said.

Drivers should find alternate routes and avoid the area.
