MothWorks Senior Storyteller hosts Literacy Services 50th Anniversary Celebration “Stories By The Sea”
Literacy Services of Indian River County is continuing its 50th Anniversary celebration, which features a special series of events. The festivities kicked off with a Launch Party this past fall and will culminate on Monday March 7, 2022 with “Stories by the Sea” at the Sea Oaks Beach Club.
Students and tutors, the honored guests at this historic milestone event, will share their personal narratives during a presentation led by Bonnie Levison, a storytelling coach specializes in the art of true, first-person stories.
Levison is a Senior Storytelling Instructor for MothWorks, a division of The Moth in New York City, where she has been a member of the team since 2009. As a Moth StorySLAM champion and Mainstage storyteller, her stories have been featured on The Moth Podcast and Peabody Award Winning Moth Radio Hour.
Levison also co-founded The Nantucket Comedy Festival, has hosted the radio show Anything Goes on WGCH Radio, and currently produces and hosts independent programs such as Story Barn, a storytelling show in Connecticut now in its 10th year.
“Bonnie has been working with us since the fall to help our Literacy Services’ storytellers celebrate their accomplishments and illuminate the importance of English language literacy in helping all adults achieve their goals. We are thrilled to have her expertise to host a truly special evening,” said Jessica Schmitt, Literacy Services Executive Director, expressing her excitement.
The evening will also include cocktails and heavy hors d’oeuvres, special oceanside entertainment and, of course, a delicious and festive 50th Anniversary cake! A Raffle and Silent Auction will offer guests the opportunity to go home with treasures while helping to further the vision of Literacy Services to empower all adults with the language and literacy skills they need to thrive in the community.
Selected tickets are still available for the March 7th event and may be purchased by calling the Literacy Services office at 772-778-2223. The entire series of anniversary events have been presented by Don and Sandy Mann, along with Byron and Nancy Sugahara, and have been supported in part by more than 40 generous sponsors.
A United Way supported agency, Literacy Services relies on more than 100 volunteer tutors who provide free, confidential and one-to-one tutoring to individuals 16 and older or within group settings at the request of local employers. Tutors, who do not need any prior teaching experience, receive all necessary training, ongoing support and resources. Additional tutors are needed to provide services to a waiting list of more than 60 students.
Tickets to the March 7 “Stories by the Sea” 50th Anniversary Celebration at the Sea Oaks Beach Club are $200.
