Cocoa man charged after shooting BB gun into vehicle

FELLSMERE — A 33-year-old Cocoa man was jailed last week after deputies said he shot a BB gun at another vehicle – shattering the window – while driving on the interstate.

No serious injuries were reported.

Jeffery Lee Jenkins was charged with shooting or throwing deadly missile, criminal mischief and violation of probation. Jenkins was released Monday from the Indian River County Jail on $80,000 bond.

Indian River County sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a shooting at 11:16 p.m. Feb. 16 near Interstate 95 and County Road 512. A man driving a red pickup truck and a woman who was a passenger were traveling on southbound I-95 earlier.

The truck was in the middle lane when it passed a white Ford pickup, driven by Jenkins, in the outside lane. As the truck rode by the Ford, the man and woman “heard a loud noise consistent with the vehicle being shot at,” reports show.

The woman was hit with shards of broken glass and thought she was shot, deputies said. The woman turned on her phone’s flashlight and saw the window was shattered with a small hole in the lower corner.

Deputies said Jenkins followed the pair in the truck as they took exit 156, headed westbound on C.R. 512 and made a U-turn. The man in the truck drove to the I-95 overpass, where he spoke with Fellsmere police.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived on scene and spoke with Jenkins near 106th Avenue and C.R. 512, where he denied shooting at another vehicle. Jenkins told deputies he was preoccupied eating fast food from Wendy’s while driving, reports show.

Deputies searched Jenkins’ truck and found a spent CO2 cartridge on the driver’s seat floorboard. Deputies also found a bottle containing several metal BB’s and a black AR style replica BB rifle, officials said.

The rifle had an inserted magazine containing more metal BB’s, reports show.

Deputies arrested Jenkins and booked him into the county jail. Jenkins has an arraignment at 8:45 a.m. March 25, court records show.
