INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A Vero Beach bicyclist was killed after she was struck by a pickup truck Tuesday afternoon, authorities said. The two-vehicle crash closed eastbound State Road 60 for several hours.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers identified the bicyclist as a 28-year-old woman. The truck driver, a 35-year-old Vero Beach man, was not hurt.
Troopers are no longer releasing the names of crash victims because of privacy reasons.
The collision happened about 5:20 p.m. at S.R. 60 and 87th Avenue, just east of Interstate 95, Indian River County sheriff’s officials said. Troopers said the pickup was headed eastbound on S.R. 60 in the right lane.
The bicyclist started to head northbound across the eastbound lanes of traffic on S.R. 60. Then, the right front of the truck struck the bicyclist, troopers said.
The bicyclist was taken to Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead, troopers said. The woman’s next of kin had not been notified as of late Tuesday.
Troopers said the woman was not wearing a helmet during the crash.
Law enforcement officials closed the eastbound lanes of S.R. 60 for several hours and rerouted traffic to 90th Avenue. All lanes were reopened by 10 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol traffic map.
The crash remains under investigation.
