Literacy Services of Indian River County recently received City and County Proclamations which recognized the mission, vision and accomplishments of the nonprofit organization, which is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year.
On February 1, 2022, Rey Neville, Vice Mayor of Vero Beach, read the City Proclamation to a packed audience.
Jessica Schmitt, Literacy Services Executive Director, gratefully accepted the decree, stating that, “by celebrating this important milestone, we hope to illuminate the importance of English language literacy and that our community is inspired to get involved.”
The following week, County Commissioner Susan Adams read the County Proclamation which, additionally, recognized the group of women who founded the organization 50 years ago.
Schmitt thanked the commission, which provides office space to Literacy Services in the Indian River County Main Library and North County Library, for their support. She also acknowledged the dedication of Literacy Services’ tutors and congratulated its students for their many achievements.
Literacy Services, founded in 1971, delivers comprehensive and innovative learning opportunities to local adults seeking to learn the English language or improve their literacy skills to achieve their individual goals. Its vision is to empower all adults with the language and literacy skills they need to thrive in the community.
The organization is commemorating its 50th Anniversary with a series of events throughout the season. The celebration kicked off with a Launch Party this past fall and will culminate with a special evening event at the Sea Oaks Beach Club on March 7, 2022. Sponsorships are still available for the season.
A United Way supported agency, Literacy Services relies on more than 100 volunteer tutors to provide its services. Tutors, who do not need any prior teaching experience, receive all necessary training, ongoing support and resources. Additional tutors are needed to provide services to a waiting list of more than 60 students.
