Literacy Services hosts 50th Anniversary Past, Present and Future Tutor Social

Tutors are the lifeblood of Literacy Services of Indian River County, which is celebrating its 50th Anniversary throughout the season with a series of events. Roughly 100 past, present, and future tutors gathered at Walking Tree Brewery to ring in the holidays and celebrate the success of the nonprofit organization.

Guests enjoyed lite bites, local brews, and fellowship, as they reflected on their experiences or considered becoming tutors of local adults seeking to learn or improve their English and literacy skills.

Although there were fun games to spark conversations, guests were not short on their enthusiasm for the program and their students’ success. Their delight in volunteering and being together once again was evident in the smiles and laughter of the group.

This was the organization’s second event; the first being a Launch Party in November. Other events being planned include a donor reception and student celebration, culminating with a special evening on March 7, 2022 at the Sea Oaks Beach Club.

Presenting sponsors of the 50th Anniversary Events Series are Sandy and Don Mann, along with Nancy and Byron Sugahara. Sponsorships are still available for the season and more information can be found on the organization’s website, www.literacyservicesirc.org.

Literacy Services was founded in 1971 with a mission to deliver comprehensive and innovative learning opportunities to local adults seeking English language and literacy skills to achieve their goals. Literacy Services’ vision is that all adults are empowered with the literacy skills they need to thrive in the community.

The organization, a United Way supported agency, relies on more than 100 volunteer tutors, who provide free, confidential and one-to-one tutoring to individuals aged 16 and older or within group settings at the request of local employers. Tutors, who do not need prior teaching experience, receive training, ongoing support and resources from Literacy Services. Additional tutors are currently needed to accommodate a waiting list of over 60 students.
