More than 100 triathletes braved the elements during Capt. Hiram’s ninth annual River Challenge Sprint Triathlon. Participants dove into the water at the Sandbar to swim ¼ mile, before biking 12 miles and running 5 kilometers along the waterfront to help raise awareness about the deteriorating health of the Indian River Lagoon.
The race, which challenges folks to “Get off your ass and save some seagrass,” supports the efforts of ecologically focused nonprofits. This year’s beneficiary was the Environmental Learning Center, whose goal is to encourage people to be active stewards of the environment and their own well-being. Ed Donner, 54:35, won first overall, and Shelly Whisenhant, 1:10, won first female finisher.
