INDIAN RIVER SHORES — The city’s sole CVS Pharmacy store closed Friday morning after a small fire broke out in a bathroom, officers said. The fire originated in the exhaust fan that was left on inside the lavatory.

“They left it running and it overheated,” Indian River Shores Chief and Public Safety Director Rich Rosell said. “They found (the fan) melted in the toilet.”

No injuries were reported from the blaze, Rosell said in a statement. Rosell said the store was closed at the time of the fire.

Indian River Shores Public Safety Department officers responded to reports of a fire about 7 a.m. at CVS Pharmacy, 5052 Highway A1A. Shores officers are triple-certified as law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians, with most also being paramedics.

Shores firefighters were at the scene within five minutes, and Indian River County Fire Rescue crews arrived shortly after, officials said. Firefighters located the flames in the bathroom in the back of the building.

The flames climbed up to a small space above the lavatory and reached an adjacent room, officers said. Firefighters knocked the flames down within a half-hour, Rosell said.

Electricity was later restored to the building. But, the business remained closed Friday evening pending a damage assessment, officers said.
