A Pirates in the Park 2-Miler hosted by the Running Zone Foundation immediately followed the Pirate and Caribbean Festival Saturday and included a post-race Pirate Party sponsored by American Icon Brewery.

The race beneficiary was the Vero Beach High School cross country program, which consists of 45 athletes enrolled in the VBHS varsity and junior varsity girls and boys teams, as well as Charter High School, home school and two foreign exchange students. Coach Joanne Duncanson said students compete weekly in large invitational cross country meets, frequently leaving the school Saturday mornings at 5 a.m., calling them “very dedicated athletes.”

Many also compete in track and field distance events in the spring. Funds raised for the Booster Club will be used for equipment not supplied by schools, and food and drink for meets and an end-of-season awards banquet.
