Robert Edmond Wilkes, 88, Vero Beach
January 21, 1933 – September 11, 2021
Robert Edmond Wilkes, 88, of Vero Beach, Florida, and beloved husband of Carol Conron Wilkes, passed away after a long illness in the early hours of Saturday, September 11.
He was born on January 21, 1933 in Norwalk, CT, the eldest son of Helen Edmond Wilkes and Howard Ranke Wilkes.
Growing up in New Canaan, CT, he attended New Canaan Country Day School before spending his high school years at The Loomis School. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree at Williams College, participated in R.O.T.C. and graduated with a major in geology in 1955. Taking his geology major to the Texas oil fields with an oil exploration team during the summer of his junior year, he dealt with sweltering heat and an abundance of rattlesnakes. This experience convinced him that a career in finance might be a better fit.
Bob and Carol were married June 25, 1955. After the honeymoon, he started his career in Citibank’s financial training program and soon after he was called to serve with the US Air Force where he earned the rank of Captain. He spent most of his time piloting C130’s, while also becoming a proficient helicopter pilot. After his discharge from the Air Force, the bright lights of New York lured him back to Citibank, and his career was launched. The family settled into the suburbs of Fairfield County, CT. While working full time in New York City and commuting from Darien, CT, he attended New York University School of Business Administration. He developed an extensive background in management, credit and treasury, and business development. The majority of his career was spent at Citibank, Morgan Guaranty Trust Company, and First Valley Bank, with shorter stints at Magnavox, Maryland National Bank and First Jersey National Bank. He retired as President of Summit Bancorp Pennsylvania.
While working and in retirement, he served on a number of executive boards: both corporate, and non-profit organizations.
Family and sports were in the forefront of activities in the Wilkes household. If we weren’t playing, we were watching another family member’s game. If we ever struck out in a Little League baseball game, we spent the next Saturday having our swings refined and getting coached on some of the more strategic elements of the game. He really was a great student and fan of all sports, and a very good coach; we learned proper sportsmanship and how competitiveness could help us in all facets of life. Retirement gave him the chance to take a deeper dive into golf and become a proficient single-digit player. Golf became a sport where we could all play together, have fun, and see if anyone could beat Pop. It is unclear any of us ever did.
Our parents raised four children: Robert Edmond Wilkes, Jr (wife Lisa Wheeler Wilkes), William Blake Wilkes (wife Gibson Rymar Wilkes), Howard Parsons Wilkes (wife Marigrace Brennan Wilkes) and Kimberly Wilkes Tirrell (her husband Wayne Tirrell). He was also a loving grandfather of 13 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Adrienne Wilkes Monroe, and brother, Arthur Wilkes. The entire Wilkes family would like to thank the staff at both Private Nursing Home, Inc, and Somerset House for the loving care he received in his final months.
A service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church at 11am on October 15th. Arrangements by Strunk Funeral Homes & Crematory.
