Jacqueline and Sam Cannon have lived an adventurous life, making their home in a wide range of environs, from plains to mountains to islands. The one thing that remained constant through it all was their love of fishing wherever they were in the world.
When the couple decided was ready to move again, looking for a place where they could have access to quality healthcare along with great fishing and other lifestyle benefits, a good friend recommended Vero Beach. “Our first visit sold us,” say the Cannons. “The people are warm, friendly, talented and caring.”
In The Moorings, the Cannons found they could have a dock for their boat right outside their living room with “the Intracoastal Waterway and its ocean connection through Fort Pierce Inlet, in our backyard,” and purchased their home at 1901 Bay Road at the Pointes in The Moorings.
This condo is an end unit, one of the largest in the Pointes, says Daina Bertrand, realtor with The Moorings Realty Sales Co. “These corner units don’t come on the market very often.
They’re fabulous because they have these big wrap-around windows.”
When the Cannons found their personal piece of paradise on Vero’s barrier island, they made it their own by thoroughly upgrading the condo, taking it down to the studs. A renovation by Della Porta Construction included a complete overhaul of systems and interior design, replacing the HVAC, plumbing, electrical and water heater; reconfiguring and modernizing the layout into an open plan design; raising the ceiling; and updating cabinetry, woodwork and closets.
Wanting to expand the footprint of the living space and make more use out of the home’s traditional “Florida room” year-round, the Cannons raised the floor to match the rest of the house and enclosed the lanai area, taking full advantage of the space and light.
“Through our many walls of windows, we watch the ever-changing sky, waterfront and gardens,” say the Cannons, who enjoy the variety of birds, land and sea creatures they encounter daily. “We can walk down our dock and look at the snook, sheepshead, dolphin and other species feeding.”
A wide central hallway through the condo allows natural light to filter throughout while providing a buffer between living spaces. From the front entry, two bedrooms and a shared bathroom are in a wing to the right, providing privacy for guests.
Heading deeper into the condo, on the left side of the hallway, a laundry room and storage space have been strategically hidden behind the powder room, with the owner’s suite located further down the hallway. The updated bathroom offers a water closet, double vanity, soaking tub with quartz surround and frameless glass shower.
A large walk-in closet completes the spacious bedroom, which has impact sliders opening onto the glassed-in porch area so the owners can take in the comings and goings of the marina while still abed.
The communal living areas are located on the opposite side of the hallway, where the Cannons opened things up, taking full advantage of the view. A bar and wine refrigerator are located just behind the island countertop. Guests can sit and chat with the chef du jour while enjoying a cup of coffee or glass of wine – not missing a minute of the water view.
The kitchen itself is a chef’s dream with JennAir appliances and a serving hatch where dishes can be passed through to the dining room so that you have separate but connected spaces.
A wall of glass defines the back of the condo where the living room and dining areas are located. There you can take in views of the marina and Indian River Lagoon beyond and enjoy cocktails in an intimate seating area while watching the sunset.
“It’s the Florida package lifestyle – the dock, the beach and the renovated condo with three bedrooms. It’s move-in ready,” says Bertrand.
The Pointes – a 39-unit condominium – sits on Moorings Bay, one of the most protected harbors in The Moorings, with private, riverfront docks.
The Cannons’ condo is a ground-floor unit so you can easily pop out the back door to the dock, head down the path to the community pool, or let your pets out to explore. The Pointes “went native” several years ago, replacing grass and invasive plants with native and Florida-friendly plants to help protect the Lagoon.
The Moorings Property Owners Association offers private beach access and patrolled security. The Moorings Yacht & Country Club provides access to Pete Dye’s signature golf course, Jim Fazio’s Hawk’s Nest championship course on the mainland; croquet, tennis and pickleball courts; a state-of-the-art fitness center with pool and spa; a yacht club; and fine and casual dining.
It’s just a short drive from the Moorings to Vero’s Ocean Drive for shopping and dining or the Riverside Theatre and the Vero Beach Museum of Art for cultural outings. For families with children, Saint Edward’s School is located nearby.
