Cocaine, ecstasy seized in drug bust not far from elementary school

VERO BEACH — Two men were jailed after a drug bust where deputies seized cocaine, ecstasy, marijuana and ammunition from an apartment complex not far from an elementary school Tuesday.

Deputies said street crime detectives have conducted investigations in the area behind Rosewood Magnet School in an attempt to stop the sale of illegal drugs near the campus. The sheriff’s SWAT team completed two search warrants that led to the arrests of Ray Alphonso Brown Jr. and Marquis Darrell Johnson.

Brown, 32, and Johnson, 44, both of the 1800 block of 40th Avenue, Vero Beach, were arrested on a variety of charges including possession of cocaine, possession of ecstasy and possession of drug paraphernalia. Both were also served warrants for a variety of charges.

Brown’s warrant charged him with possession and sale of methamphetamine within 1,000 feet of a church, possession and sale of methamphetamine within 1,000 feet of a school, two counts of possession of methamphetamine, driving while license suspended or revoked and unlawful use of a two-way communications device. Johnson’s warrant had charges including four counts of sale, manufacture, delivery of cocaine; four counts of possession of cocaine and unlawful use of a two-way communications device.

The charges from the warrants stem from an undercover drug probe conducted July 21 – July 30.

Brown was held Wednesday at the Indian River County Jail on $91,000 bond, while Johnson was held on $156,000 bond.

Deputies conducted the search warrant about 9 a.m. at apartment units belonging to Brown and Johnson. The apartment complex is just down the street from Thompson Field, located on the campus of Rosewood Magnet School.

Inside Brown’s bedroom, deputies found a clear plastic bag with a white powder that tested positive for cocaine, reports show. Deputies also found 16 multicolored pills that tested positive for ecstasy, a glass mason jar containing marijuana and two 100-round boxes of Remington .45 caliber ammunition.

Inside Johnson’s bedroom, deputies found a bag of cocaine and an electronic scale.

Deputies arrested Brown and Johnson. Both men have arraignments at 8:45 a.m. Sept. 10, court records show.
