Richard Elliott Compton, 78, Vero Beach

June 10, 1943 – July 08, 2021

Richard Elliott Compton, 78, of Vero Beach, Florida, passed at his Vero Beach home Thursday, July 8, 2021, after a long battle with cancer. Richard was the son of George William and Ruth Lucille Compton, also of Vero Beach.

Richard was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1943. He moved with his family to Vero Beach, Florida in 1954.  Richard graduated from Vero Beach High School in 1962.

Richard retired after more than 40 years as a Parts Manager for Massey Ferguson dealers in Vero Beach and Lakeland, where he was loved by co-workers and customers alike.  He was a devoted Tampa Bay Rays baseball fan and closely followed the NASCAR circuit.  Richard had a lifelong love of trains and was an active member of the Florida East Coast Railway Society. But above all else he loved his family.

Richard was preceded in death by his first wife Nancy Abrams Compton in 1970, second wife Mary Mahaffey Compton in 2016, and sister Elizabeth Ann Compton Wodtke in 2021.

Richard is survived by his two sons, Richard Elliott Compton II with his wife Denise Hodges of Joppa, Maryland; and Lawrence James Compton with his wife Dawn Compton of Fellsmere, Florida.  He is also survived by two daughters, Lisa Compton Turner with her husband Craig “Dobie” Turner of Fellsmere, Florida; and Georgianne Compton with her fiancé Curtis VanProoyen of Santa Rosa, California.  Richard is additionally survived by six grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, sisters Becky Compton Jones with her husband Calvin Ray Jones of Vero Beach, Florida and Mary Compton Taylor with her husband Richard Wilks Taylor of Cumming, Georgia.

The inurnment will take place at Crestlawn Cemetery at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 21st followed by a celebration of life at Richard’s home starting at 2:00 PM.

Frederick Albert Skove, 92, Vero Beach

September 19, 1928 – July 4, 2021

Professor Emeritus Frederick Albert Skove, 92, died peacefully in the early hours of July 4, 2021, at the VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach Florida.  Fred was preceded in death by his first wife, Christine Simmons in 2005.  He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Wirth Skove, of Indian River Shores, Florida and his three children, Beth Roche of Bokeelia, Florida, Patricia Titus of Naples Florida, and Neal Skove of Pasadena, Maryland, and six grandchildren.

Fred Skove was born in Plainfield, NJ on September 19, 1928.  He enlisted in the Navy upon his 17th birthday in September 1945.  He served in the US Navy as a radar technician until 1949.  In 1950 Fred married Christine Simmons of Newburgh, NY.  They were married for 55 years and had three children.  Fred earned BA and MS degrees from Rutgers University where he also worked and taught from 1950 until 1968.  In 1968 Fred joined the faculty of the US Naval Academy where he founded the Computer Science Department.  In 1983 the USNA Computer Science department was accredited by the Computer Science Accreditation Board and is nationally recognized for its excellence.  In 1984 Fred was awarded the US Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award for his contributions to the Navy.  After 24 years Fred retired from the Naval Academy in 1992.  A few years later Fred and his first wife, Chris settled in Vero Beach, Florida.

In 2007 Fred married Eleanor Wirth Bannon of Fanwood, NJ in Vero Beach.  Ellie and Fred had known each other since high school.  Ellie was at Flower Fifth Avenue Nursing School in New York City in 1949 when she introduced her best friend and roommate, Christine Simmons to Fred.  Fred and Chris got married within a year and they all remained friends over the years.  Fred is also survived by his six stepchildren and twelve step-grandchildren through Ellie.

Fred will be buried at the Naval Academy Columbarium on August 9, 2021.

Mary Broshowski, 100, Vero Beach

December 05, 1920 – July 08, 2021

Mary Broshowski, 100, of Vero Beach, died Thursday, July 9, 2021.

Mary was a homemaker, active member of the Polish American Club, and the Italian American Club.

Mary was born in Williamburg, Brooklyn, later moved to Queens, and then Long Island, NY, final move to Vero Beach, FL in 1972.

Mary preceeds her husband, Michael, and her daughter Babara Teta.  Mary is survived by her children, Michael Broshowski, Kathryn Guilfoyle and Janet Saracino.  She is also survived by 6 grandchildren.

Family will be holding a private service.
