VITA program helps local families

The results are in, and we’re happy to announce that the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program brought over $1 million back to families in our community – $1.6 million, to be exact!

VITA is a national IRS-sponsored program that offers FREE tax services to individuals and families with incomes less than $57,000. This service is provided annually from January through Tax Day.

Instead of traditional face-to-face meetings, VITA was turned into a valet service this year, where clients dropped off their tax materials at the United Way Center and would then pick up their return once completed. Twenty-seven IRS-trained and certified volunteers ensured taxpayers received all of the credits for which they were eligible.

2021 Impact at a Glance:

·     1,394 tax returns were prepared and filed

·     $1,165 average refund amount

·     $243,950 saved in tax preparation fees

·     $313,402 in earned income credits

When many families in the ALICE population count every penny for essentials, we are happy to deliver some good news and provide them with a bit of relief.

ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, and Employed, representing households living paycheck to paycheck and unable to provide basic necessities for themselves or their families. These dollars saved can now be used to purchase groceries, cover rent or mortgage payments, or rebuild emergency savings.

Our entire community benefits when our neighbors can move from a financial tightrope to solid ground. This is just one of the many resources and tools United Way champions to help people in our community achieve financial stability.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Meredith Egan
