Elnor “Ellie” Paul Matthews, 97, Vero Beach

August 09, 1923 – June 08, 2021

Elnor “Ellie” Paul Matthews, age 97, of Vero Beach, passed away on Tuesday, June 8, 2021, at Sebastian River Medical Center.

She was born August 9, 1923, in Cleveland, Ohio and moved to Vero Beach from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Retiring as an accountant, Ellie was employed by The Spires of Pompano Beach and McNeil Sign Company. She also handled the accounting for Ohio Washer Company, the business she and her first husband owned for years.

Ellie loved being with people and was a member of both the Red Hats Society and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, in Sebastian.

She was a graduate of “The School of Hard Knocks.”

Survivors include her son, Lawrence Paul (Pamela) of Sebastian; daughter, Donna Miller (Wayne) of The Villages; sister-in-law, Rosalind Robb of Pompano Beach; grandsons, Erik Paul and Joshua Paul; granddaughters, Danielle Kane, Jacqueline Rhodes, and Teresa Smith; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Shirley Anne Miller of Sebastian; her husband, Leonard Matthews; and her father and mother, Clarence and Marie Dorsey of Pompano Beach.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Anne B. Smith, 94, Vero Beach

December 4, 1926 – June 12, 2021

Anne B. Smith of Vero Beach, Florida passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 12, 2021.

She was 94 years old. Anne was born December 4, 1926 in Central City, Pennsylvania to Stephen and Maria Matey. She moved with her parents and family to Warren, Ohio when she was an infant. She was a resident of Vero Beach for 51 years, moving here in March 1970.

She graduated from Warren G. Harding High School, Warren, Ohio in June 1945. She attended St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing in Youngstown, Ohio where she graduated with her RN. She also graduated from Youngstown State University with a BS in Education. Her education continued by earning a Master’s Degree in Administration and Supervision from Nova University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Anne was employed as a floor nurse at St. Elizabeth Hospital and Northside Hospital and later became a night supervisor. She also worked 8 years with the Mental Health Program. In Vero Beach, she worked at Indian River Memorial Hospital and taught health and geography for the Indian River County School System at Gifford Middle School until her retirement in 1982.

She was a co-medical nurse supervisor with Indian River County Emergency Management during Hurricane David.

She was a member of Vero Beach Country Club, Serra Club of Indian River County, Oak Harbor Club

and a former member of Sapphire Lakes Country Club in Sapphire, North Carolina.

She married Matthew J. Smith in 1982 and together they enjoyed travelling the world and golfing. Anne was also an avid reader and enjoyed gardening.

Anne is survived by her two children Regina Serman Ward (David) of Vero Beach, Florida and her son, Vincent P. Serman, Jr. of Sebastian, Florida, her 5 grandchildren: Maria Ward Klipstine (Richard), Elizabeth Ward Kapsiak (John), Jennifer Ward Skowron, Laura Ward Short (Jason) and John David Ward. She was also blessed with 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers and one sister.

Robert J. Grady Jr. 74, Vero Beach

December 18, 1946 – June 09, 2021

SEBASTIAN, FL Robert J. Grady Jr. 74, formerly of Connecticut passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at VNA Hospice in Vero Beach. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joanne (DeLoi) Grady.

Bob was born in Waterbury, CT on December 18, 1946, son of the late Robert and Francis (Greene) Grady. He graduated from Crosby High School and served in the National Guard. Bob worked for C.L.&P. for 40 years, retiring in 2008. He enjoyed hunting, bowling and golf and was a lifetime member of the Elks Club #265. In 2009 he and his wife relocated from Watertown, CT to Sebastian, FL where he loved to ride his Harley, golf and enjoy retirement. Bob liked to laugh and to make others laugh. He will always be remembered for his wit and sense of humor. He will be missed.

Besides his wife, Robert is survived by his daughter, Jillian Grady of Bristol, CT and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his son, Shawn Grady and his sister, Sheila (Grady) Gerdauskas.

A Memorial Service will be held in Connecticut at a later date.
