GIFFORD — A tearful confession, DNA evidence and surveillance footage led deputies to arrest a murder suspect who they said killed an army veteran and stole his belongings earlier this year. Eugene "Gene" Bain, 65, admitted to detectives that he repeatedly stabbed a man sleeping outside of Stone Brothers Funeral Chapel before walking off with his scooter, backpack and cell phone, Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers said. SEBASTIAN — Authorities are working to bring additional charges against a man they said brought drugs into a hospital last weekend, causing him and the woman he was visiting to overdose. Deputies said Forrest Cameron Smith brought 26 grams of powdered cocaine and 47 alprazolam pills to Sebastian River Medical Center. Deputies: Tuesday night shootout sends bullets into houses, vehicles

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Security footage captured two suspects running and shooting at each other inside a residential area late Tuesday, blasting bullets into homes and vehicles nearby, sheriff's officials said. Now, deputies are asking anyone with information on the incident or the individuals involved to come forward. "There were no injuries to anyone inside the houses," said Sgt. Kevin Jaworski, a spokesperson with the Indian River County Sheriff's Office. The late-night shooting led deputies to close the roads for about three hours, Jaworski said.
