Man bitten by shark near Disney Vero Beach Resort

VERO BEACH — A 54-year-old man was taken to a trauma center after he was bitten by a shark Thursday near Disney’s Vero Beach Resort, fire rescue crews said.

The man, who authorities believe is from out of town, was riding the ocean waves on a boogie board when the incident happened, Indian River County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Roger Dion said. The man suffered bite marks to his right leg, Dion said.

Fire crews responded to the incident about 10:22 a.m. at the resort, 9250 Island Grove Terrace, south of County Road 510. Dion said the man was vacationing at the resort with his wife when he was bit by the shark.

Details on the shark’s size and breed were not immediately available.

The man was taken by ambulance to Sebastian River Medical Center. Then, he was flown to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce with non-life threatening injuries, Dion said.
